MINUTES OF THE MEETING
TARIFFVILLE VILLAGE ASSOCIATION
October 26, 2006
Report on Festival was great. We cleared about $3,400.00. Little bit of rain. Had a great year. Thank you everyone for all the help. John would like to thank Chet and Laurie Matczak in particular for the great job they did on the raffle and silent auction. Joan recognized Rowena for all of her efforts in selling the Tariffville products. There are still plenty of items that can be bought on our website. The citizens of the year were honored for their service as volunteer firefighters for Tariffville. Their names are Walter “Wally” Banzhaf, Richard Brown, Arthur Hayes, Wayne Hoffman, Michael Jepeal, Richard Ostop, Frank Polka, Arnie Salls, John Strider, James Vaitulevich. . They each received a certificate. A plaque with all the names can be viewed at the Tariffville Firehouse.
Halloween Parade Sunday, 10-29-06 3:00pm on the Green. Kids will march from the green to the firehouse where refreshments will be served. The other event coming up will be the Holiday Sing-a-long on December 17 at 4:00 PM.
Report on progress of designation of 31 Main St. as a “Village Green”
We have a design that was shown to and endorsed by Culture, Parks & Rec. It has also been presented to Planning and generally endorsed by them. We have gotten general support from everyone involved. Rob Heagney secured a $5,000 grant to provide a water fountain and electricity to the Green. It was noted that Schoenhardt Architects may be interested in helping with a gazebo. John Romano needs to know of any changes that are to be made. He suggests that we send a letter to the Board of Selectmen so that the money will be budgeted, since the town is beginning a new budget cycle. Tom Vincent told John Nagy that we will be on the BOS agenda on either Nov. 13th or the 27th. We just received a letter from the Town attorney that gives the steps we need to take. John Nagy said that we would be going to the Board of Selectman formally. John Hampton suggests that we ask the BOS for a written commitment. John Nagy is hoping that we might be able to receive some type of grant for paths, lamps etc. John Hampton suggests that we look into how much it will cost on a monthly basis to run the park by looking into what Shultz Park's maintenance level is. Our intention has always been that we would build a high aesthetic/low maintenance park. Frank Haviland suggests we go to BOS with an estimate of our costs with the gazebo and go from there. John Nagy wrote a letter to Rob Heagney and the town to thank them for the $5000.00 grant. He also sent a letter to the town to thank them for all of their support for our efforts.
Thanks to all or our gardeners, the green looks great. Thanks to Culture, Parks and Recreation for the mowing.
Nothing really new to report. There will be pumpkin decorating contest at the school this week.
Presidental award for excellence it Math and Science. The new sign is up and looks great.
Laurie Matczak read a letter regarding the bike path. Bryan West mentioned that the Town ran a bush hog along both sides of the newly paved road in the park, which really has opened up the view of the river tremendously. Thank you to Gerry Toner and Parks and Rec. Frank Haviland mentioned that he approached some kayakers from Long River Kayaking in Windsor and that they were very enthusiastic about our plans for the river. Bryan met with Schoenhardt Architects a few weeks back and they have expressed great interest in what is going on in the Village and would like to get involved.
Website is due to be updated in a few days. This will be a significant change. There is a mention on the site regarding the Halloween Parade and Scott reported that there were many hits. This is encouraging because it means people are showing interest in our site. The ability to track hits will be a useful tool as we further refine our site.
Joan Nagy mentioned that she noticed a very large pedestrian crosswalk sign on Rt. 10-202 near the center of Granby. Could this type of sign work for Elm Street? John Romano has sent a letter to Rob Heagney regarding the problem on Elm Street. Mr. Heagney has forwarded the letter to the DOT and they will initiate a study but not right away. John will keep us updated on this issue.
TVA Festival
Our Festival was inadvertently held on Rosh Hashanah this year and we apologize for that oversight. Next year we will do our best to avoid any similar mistakes. Joel Mandel sent John a note mentioning that September 22nd 2007 is Yom Kippur.
Willow Arms Apartment
John Hampton has received some complaints from renters about some problems at 55 Elm Street. He has met with them and will contact the new manager to see what can be done.
Linda Ash from Keep the Woods conveyed to John Romano that they are very interested in what we are doing here in Tariffville and as soon as the Keep the Woods effort is completed they would like to help us out.
Blight Ordinance
Linda Schofield reports that there is a blight ordinance for the town and the link is on our website.
