DRAFT MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL MEETING
TARIFFVILLE VILLAGE ASSOCIATION
February 4, 2006
The Annual Meeting and Pot Luck Supper began at 5:30 at Trinity Church, Tariffville. Approximately 80 people gathered for a time to “meet and greet” before the Pot Luck supper began at 6:00.
John Nagy thanked Barbara McGrath of the Connecticut Urban Legal Initiative for all her hard work in helping us to achieve non-profit status. She was presented with a sweatshirt and hat from Tariffville. She noted that although she now lives in Windham, her husband still returns to Tariffville for his haircuts at Roland’s.
John presented the Annual Report (copy attached) at 7:00. A few additional pieces of information that did not appear in the report were given:
- Tariffville School: A Committee is being formed to educate the public about the May referendum that will include a request for monies for both the Tariffville School renovation and the Library expansion. The TVA will be represented on the committee. We were reminded that the school was recognized as a National School of Character.
- Gersten property: The town is moving forward on the Gersten property. They have hired someone to do an appraisal.
- 31 Main St.: This property is now in the pipeline to become a town park.
- Recreation: It was noted that we are an “oasis on the trail” at the meeting place of 4 areas of national recognition: the National Register of Historic Places, the Metacomet Trail, the Farmington River and the Bike Path.
- Tariffville Cemetery Project: Girl Scout Jennifer Soltis, a student at SHS who is completing her Girl Scout Gold Award Project (comparable to Eagle Scout) is mapping and transcribing the stones in the Tariffville Non-Sectarian Cemetery in an effort to education members of the town about local history. Volunteers are needed for the following areas:
- Photography
- Mapping
- Spring cleanup
- Website design (this will be part of the Simsbury Historical Society web page)
- Proofreading
- Stone assessment (assess condition of these fragile, mostly Civil War era stones)
- Help in any other capacity
Jennifer has information from a 1934 WPA survey and a previous Boy Scout project. As a final presentation, Jennifer will do a walking tour of the cemetery. The TVA will help with the planning and publicity for the walking tour at a time to be determined by Jennifer. To contact Jennifer, call 651-3941 or e-mail her at viojen@comcast.net.
- Miscellaneous:
- In addressing the issue of preparation for a Pandemic, Dave Vania noted that during the 1955 Flood, the village was only accessible by helicopter. At that time, people came together to do what needed to be done. Dave personally worked on sand bagging the well on the hill to preserve the clean water supply.
- Father Tom Furrer called Tariffville “the cream of the crop”.
- John urged us all to keep our focus as we forge “full speed ahead in all directions”.
The evening was adjourned at 8:00 pm.
